How we test projectors
Every ranking on Lumen Verdict comes from the same hands-on process: real projectors, the same measurements on each one, on the same wall, and the criteria that actually decide whether a projector works in your room. Here is exactly how we reach our verdicts.
We set up every projector ourselves
We do not score projectors from a spec sheet. We buy or borrow each model that makes our shortlist, and we set it up the way you would: on a shelf or a tripod, pointed at the same 100-inch white wall in the same room, fed from the same sources. We then watch real content on it, film, broadcast and games, over several evenings, and we live with it long enough to judge the things that decide whether you enjoy it day to day: how easy it is to place and focus, how loud the fan is, how the picture holds up as the light in the room changes, and whether the smart features and remote are pleasant to use. A projector that looks good on paper but is a pain to set up, or washes out the moment any light gets in, has nowhere to hide once we have spent a week with it.
The measurements we take
To keep our comparisons fair and repeatable, we take the same set of measurements on every projector, on the same wall:
- Brightness, in ANSI lumens. This is the single most important figure, so we measure it rather than trust the box. We display a standard full-white test pattern, take lux readings with a calibrated meter at nine points across the image, average them and convert to ANSI lumens, in the projector's most accurate mode and again in its brightest mode. This is why our figures are honest, and often well below the marketing number: the dim portable here measures 285 ANSI lumens, not the four-figure "LED lumens" some listings quote. In our latest test the figures ranged from 225 ANSI lumens on the Samsung Freestyle to 3,290 on the Optoma UHD38.
- Throw distance and image size. We measure how far the projector must sit from the wall to fill a 100-inch image, and we record the image width it throws from a fixed three-metre distance, so you can see at a glance whether it suits your room. - Input lag. For gaming we measure input lag with a lag tester at the resolutions and refresh rates each projector supports, typically 1080p at high refresh and 4K at 60 Hz. The best here, the BenQ TK700STi, measured 4.16 ms at 1080p/120; the Epson, a film-first projector, measured 20.4 ms, fine for casual play.
- Running noise. We measure fan noise with a sound-level meter at one metre, in both Eco and bright modes, because a projector that is acceptable in a living room can be too loud beside a bed. Figures here ranged from around 32 dB on the XGIMI to noticeably louder on the lamp projectors at full brightness.
- Setup and picture checks. We time how long it takes to get a square, focused image, test the lens shift, zoom and keystone, check focus uniformity across the screen, and judge colour accuracy and black levels by eye against reference content. A projector that squares itself up automatically, like the XGIMI and the lifestyle models, saves a real amount of fiddling.
How we turn measurements into scores
Each projector is scored on three axes, each from 1 to 5: brightness (the measured ANSI lumens and how well it copes with ambient light), sharpness (resolution, focus uniformity, motion and picture quality) and ease of setup (placement flexibility, lens shift or keystone, auto-focus, smart features and how pleasant it is to live with). Those three scores feed the overall rating you see on each review. Crucially, a high score is not about being the brightest or the most expensive projector; it is about being the best projector for the room and the buyer it is aimed at. A £549 portable can score well for someone who wants a garden projector, and a £1,299 premium model can lose marks for being too dim for a bright room. We always say who a projector isn't for, not just who it is.
How we use manufacturer specifications
Specifications are a starting point, not the verdict, and projector specs need more scepticism than most. A spec sheet tells us the resolution, the throw ratio, the light source and the connections, all genuinely useful. But the headline brightness figure is the one most often inflated, with "LED lumens" or "light source lumens" quoted instead of real ANSI lumens, sometimes three to four times higher than what you actually see. So we treat the spec sheet as a hypothesis to test rather than a result to report. Where a projector lives up to its specification, we say so; where it measures far dimmer or focuses less evenly in practice than the numbers suggest, that gap is exactly what our hands-on testing exists to catch. The rating you read reflects what the projector actually does on the wall, not what the box promises.
The role of owner reviews
We read widely around each projector, including the experiences of ordinary owners, because some things only surface over months: a lamp that dims sooner than rated, a fan that gets louder, a smart platform that stops getting updates, a colour wheel that develops a rattle. A pattern of owners reporting the same niggle tells us something a week of testing cannot. We weigh that alongside our own measurements rather than instead of them: a flood of five-star reviews does not earn a projector a place on its own, and a handful of one-star complaints does not automatically disqualify one. The aim is a rounded picture, our hands-on judgement informed by the lived experience of people who have used these projectors for years.
Our independence
We are not paid by manufacturers to feature or favour their projectors, and no brand can buy a place or a higher position in our rankings. The order is decided entirely by how the projectors perform against our criteria. The projector market moves quickly as models are revised, discontinued or replaced, and prices shift. We review our rankings regularly, update prices and availability, and swap in newer projectors where they earn a place. If a projector we recommend is discontinued, we say so and point you to the closest current alternative. We would rather show a shorter list of projectors we genuinely stand behind than pad the page, so a model only stays on our list as long as it remains the best choice for its buyer.
